Notes
Anyone entering into communication has a choice of purpose. That choice can either be to persuade or to understand. It seems that a great majority of dialogue is for the purpose of persuasion. A key question to determine purpose is:
“Do I want to be right or do I want to have relationship?”
If we desire to be right, communication will be about blaming or proving a point. If we desire to have relationship, communication will be about claiming or understanding another’s point of view. We will claim our part of the responsibility and with that ownership seek ways to move to contribute to a need.
In every communication we can determine our purpose. Is it to persuade, to be right or is to understand, to have a better comprehension?
The one best purpose of communication is to seek to understand before being understood. This is evident in how we were created. We have one tongue with two uses, tasting and talking and two ears with one purpose hearing. This will help us determine the ratio of talking to listening.
We hope that this series serves we well in stressing some concepts about communication so that communication is not so stressful
